Apollo Bay to 12 Apostles 17-18/10/2015
« on: October 06, 2015, 11:42:03 PM »
My apologies to my JetSki friends not on FB I thought I posted this here on JetSki Club Over a month ago I must have stuffed up.

Reserving the Weekend of 17-18/10 for the Epic Apollo Bay to 12 Apostles PWC ride. This is a gathering of friends riding together and is not an organized event.

We will head to Apollo Bay Friday 16 October and assess the weather. The day of the weekend with the winds from the North we will ride Apollo Bay 12 apostles. The other day we will ride Apollo Bay to Lorne.

Apollo Bay to 12 apostles is approx 150km, you need to carry extra fuel, I will carry 2*22 L. Your fuel must be accessible on the water suggest a giggler siphon hose. We have done this ride 5 times and have not landed on the beach at 12 apostles due to swell.

Bring your reliable PWC, plenty of water, lunch, nibbles, all your safety gear. Lots of sunscreen. An attitude of excitement. Bring your go pros. Lots of dolphins on previous rides.

Plenty of accommodation available in and around Apollo Bay I'm thinking of camping for this ride.

Let me know if your coming by sending me a Text on 0407 844 542

Wow less than two weeks to go. Please get your skis out on the water and go for a ride before you come to Apollo bay. This ride is not suitable for the first ride for the season. Get your ski serviced if it has not been recently.

Make sure you have your top up fuel sorted. We will not be able beach along the ride. Get yourself a jiggler Syphon from Super Cheap auto. I suggest ratchet compression straps for securing jerry cans, do not use the clamp type tighteners as they loosen during the ride.

Carry lots of drinks and food and warm gear. Sunscreen is a must.

Jiggler Syphon available at Super Cheap Auto

Jerry Cans secured low to keep pressure on.

Cable tie attachments so they don't fall off when releasing the straps to use fuel.

Use ratchet straps to get lots of pressure on the jerry cans to keep them secure. Don't use straps with clamps as they work loose during a ride.

UPDATE 13/10/2015 Apollo Bay to 12 Apostles  the wind forecast is not good for this weekend.  We have a small opportunity of light winds Early Saturday morning. We will meet at Apollo Bay ramp at 5:30AM with first light at 6:03AM to be under way headed to 12 Apostles.  The wind will then build from the SW and will be on the rear quarter for the return to Apollo Bay. We may have the opportunity to retrieve and refuel at Apollo Bay and then do the bash to Lorne and back. Sunday looks to be a right off at this stage. If you can Cancel your accommodation I suggest you do and we can reschedule to another time. If you can make the early start Saturday text me on 0407 844 542. With the conditions the ride will not be suitable for passengers or Modified skis, if you choose to join us on a modified ski please ensure you have a ride buddy with you and that you have towing ability to get you back to Apollo Bay.

We made it to 12 Apostles on our 3rd attempt. No wind this morning so we thought let's try again. 4 skis to Cape Otway Lighthouse 2 skis continued Paul Madden and I. Thanks to Shane Nixon and Gavin Van Velzen for coming to the light house with us. The videos do not show the extremes of the conditions. I recon we had 5m rolling swells out bound was fairly flat between the swells. Coming back a different story. Saw apostles of dolphins. Got all the way to beyond Lochard gorge. Could not get in to shelter as the swells were huge check the white water in the videos. Refueled 200m to sea from apostles and got a call from Domenica DeMaria and Gavin they were at the lookout and could see us. Big ride back jumping down the faces of waves. Shane was at Cape Otway Lighthouse waving us on. Thanks again Shane for having the hose Ready to flush and wash the skis. We did 156ks and used 67L fuel. 7L less than average for this distance, riding rough water saves fuel. Yippee. Thanks again everyone for Joining me in another adventure. Darran Sherrard Glenn Snashall Dean Carter Jason Campbell

Dolphins came to play.

Apostles from a distance, swell to big to get close.
