Broadwater Celebration & Information Day Saturday September 6th 2014

Mandy

Fun First!
Come & celebrate why we love the Broadwater, talk to experts & community groups.

Join the BIG photo at 12 pm to show you do NOT want it given away to foreign developers - & OUR beaches are NOT for sale :)

Calling all Jet Skiers!!! We need to be a part of this effort too. We all need to support all of the community groups who are working together to show a united front against the development of Wavebreak Island.

This is not an anti development effort, just not there on our Wavebreak.

There are groups from all over the region working together for this day. We have been asked to make our presence felt on Wavebreak Island.

The reason we have been asked to be there is we are the only ones with easy access that actually get to enjoy it, so we need to make our thoughts known.

At 12pm we will make our way to Harley Park at the Grand Ramp to have a huge group photo.

Please do your best to be at Wavebreak from 10.00am this may be our last chance to go there.

Please spread the word Guys. This is a big opportunity to let the Government know that Wavebreak is not available to give away along with another Boat Ramp and access through the Seaway.
We are meeting at 10.00am to have a presence on Wavebreak (Western shore opposite Harley Park.

At 12pm we are going to have a huge photo taken of everyone together. There will be members of all communities at this meeting form, Boating, Diving, Outriggers, Fishers, Joggers, Walkers, Swimmers, Kite Boarders, Rowers, Sailers and Surfers to name a few. Please help out for just 2 hours if you can.

The Jet Ski Community needs to pull together on this one.

Hi Guys,

I have just heard on the morning news that there will be NO Cruise Ship Terminal on the Gold Coast. I am not sure how this will effect local economy, perhaps they could have looked at a decent jetty, so as passengers can disembark like they do in the Whitsunday's and Port Douglas and Pacific islands. Perhaps the money they have saved could be spent on dredging the Broadwater wh

Hi Brian,

This is a distraction.
From the beginning we have been suspicious that they would not pursue the Cruise Ship Terminal. It had too much environmental and physical negatives to be a realistic option.

The ASF consortium has been presented with a cheaper alternative to build it the Ship terminal off shore. It's costed and drawn up and can bring in much larger ships but they have not taken an interest in it.

The real project is to get a casino and a housing development onto wave-break island. This is still very much in planning.
This will still eliminate the use of the area as we know it so don't be misled into believing it won't effect us all.

We will still loose the use of the waterway due to noise and speed restrictions and there will be 3 bridges going from Wavebreak to the mainland. This will also mean the closure of the Grand Boat ramp.

The Government agreed to no development North of Seaworld. The Gold Coast has so many other areas that could benefit from a development like this. We just want it where it is positive.

We need to stay focussed. This "news release" is specifically designed to get the momentum out of the Information Day on Saturday the 6th. Please all be there if you can.

“No it’s not dead in the water, the proponent has already relocated the terminal from The Spit to Wavebreak Island,” Cr Tate said.

In response to yesterdays confusion we've put out a press release to try and clarify the issues.

Please make it to this event. There will be some very good subject matter experts available to discuss your thoughts with.

Marine Action Group calls on State Government to go back to the drawing board
August 27th, 2014

Spokesperson for the Marine Action Group and Jet Ski Club, Mandy Brown has today called for the State Government to go back to the drawing board on the Broadwater if it is serious about the concerns expressed by the Deputy Premier yesterday in relation to a lack of public consultation.

Ms. Brown said today “As we saw with Tipplers, there has been no consultation at all with marine industry representative bodies or with boating and jet ski associations. Boaties are understandably distrustful of the Gold Coast City Council which in the past has acted against their interests.

“Boating destinations are critical to the marine industry which is a vital part of the Gold Coast economy. If Wavebreak Island is turned into a concrete jungle, this would have a detrimental effect on our most popular marine destination. One section of the community should not benefit at the expense of another – that would be bad government.

“There is sufficient evidence at this time to abandon plans for a Broadwater cruise ship terminal based on the previously documented unacceptable flooding risk and the fact that 60% of the world’s current cruise ships would never be able to enter the Seaway. An offshore terminal can deliver a superior facility at a lesser cost and avoid all the problems currently faced.”

Our tourism industry and community would be better served by the enhancement of Wavebreak Island as a recreational tourism asset along with a proper public consultation program to consider the many alternative development opportunities that can deliver better outcomes for our city.

The Marine Action Group stands ready to galvanise Boaties and marine business operators to campaign for a better balance between development and enjoyment of the Broadwater if the State Government does not listen to our concerns.

John/Dirk. A few people are leaving from Cleveland and as that's a bit closer to me, I am going to launch from there. Can we meet up at Tipplers?

Thank you everyone for taking this issue seriously. This Saturday will be really important to make sure we retain the lifestyle we've come to love on the Gold Coast as Jet Skiers.

The proceedings for Saturday have had to be modified due to permitting issues so please read the following details.

Please come to Wavebreak Island at 12 noon. We will have some message boards there on display clarifying that we are not anti development, just not on Wavebreak Island.
Remember the Cruise Ship terminal is probably a smoke screen, the real intention is a Casino and 20 story apartment developments. all of which can go in many places apart from on Wavebreak and our riding destinations.

We will be ferrying some of your local Politicians (on Jet Skis :)) over to Wavebreak earlier so that they are ready to answer your questions and hear your views.

Remember this is our opportunity to demonstrate that Jet Skiers are intelligent, hard working, community and family minded citizens too, and deserve to be heard. Please bring your questions to ask.

We will have the media taking photos and videos of us on Wavebreak so I hope heaps of you can make it.

The next step is to make our way directly across to the Western shore of the Broadwater near the Grand. This is where we are all invited to be in the "Big Photo" representing everyone who would prefer Wavebreak Island be left as a destination for the members of the public who own it. The media will also be covering this.

The scheduled time for this photo to take place is 1pm.

This should only take one hour out of you Jet Skiing time. Please help us if you can and keep Wavebreak beautiful as it should be for generations of Jet Skiers to come clp clp clp

Due to the expected high numbers of people it may not be easy to chat on Saturday so please bring this information with you.
