Jet Ski Community Issues Fears Adelaide jetski exclusion zone could boost River Murray traffic
« on: December 04, 2014, 10:02:31 AM »
A boating advisory group is concerned a ban on jetskis and boats along a stretch of the Adelaide coastline will significantly increase traffic in the River Murray.

The South Australian Government has created, for the second year, a three-kilometre exclusion zone from the River Torrens outlet to Grange Road.

The River Murray Boating and Recreational Advisory Group said when the exclusion zone was introduced last year, it noticed more jetski activity in the lower Murray.

Spokeswoman Georgina Sutton said it had the potential to cause problems.

"Basically due to the width of the river and the fact that there's other traffic and swimmers and canoers and houseboats or whatever, they're confined within a much smaller area, so it's not about the particular vessels, I think it's about the way that they're operated," she said.

"People who've been used to operating jetskis in the ocean have to operate now in a very, very different environment because of the limited space, so where the open ocean allows jetskis to be able to turn at will, if you like, the river requires a lot more regulated approach to operating these vessels."
