Performance Question Yamaha FXHO Intake Grates
« on: March 03, 2015, 07:22:23 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Got the Worx sponsons on the skis and they are a massive improvement. Now we are looking at Intake grates. Anyone got any experience with them. From what I can gather top mount intakes are the way to go. Let me know if you know anymore about them then me! Thanks

Hey John,

There isnt going to be a significant difference with this on your Ski. There will be some don't get me wrong but you probably won't see a lot.

Getting the ribbon done will make a big difference though!

Either way the intake grate cant hurt that's for sure.

Yeah dad got the ribbon done on his ski and he is now as fast as me even with the 45kg weight difference. Will definitely take your advice onboard.

Like mandy said grate isnt gonna be a big deal unless your really after the best hook up in chop. You can still gain some speed or handling by shimming the ride plate.

Yeah the more I read into it the more people say that. Well what would be the next mod you'd do to a Yamaha 2015 FXHO cruiser. Under 500$ Don't need to do anything too expensive.

There isnt a great deal you can do with the aspo motors as far as mods go, basics like free flow exhaust, intake and breather bypass which are relatively cheap, then you could step it upto a reflash and prop pitch.

Its a honeycomb type of cylinder that sits in the throttle body. It's very restrictive to air flow and the first thing you should remove.

We do almost every Ski at the first service.

I'm guessing the ribbon on the FX140 is just as bad?

Might have to get mine done if that is the case.

So removing the honeycomb will let the air flow freely but will it have any other effect. I read in the manual it has something to do with stopping water getting into the cylinders. Don't see how water would get up there and past the air filter?  dno

Hey Peter,

Unfortunately water makes its way up there all the time.
It comes in the form of evaporation and droplets from the intake areas of the hull.
If a motor of say 1.8 litres capacity is spinning at 6000rpm there's a huge vacuum for air.
As it enters the hull it is moved to the bottom of the hull via the pipes you see in there. The theory is to leave the water at the bottom and take air at the top.
But with huge fast air movement droplets of water, steam and vapor rise and are taken in. This is unavoidable. The good news is that small amounts are quickly passed through albeit slowing the burn marginally.
An air pod will assist with this as the intake is lifted higher.

Sometimes water enters the hull in large volumes from flipping, hoses off/breaking, breaches etc. This can be terminal and no "ribbon" will hold it back.
I believe the ribbon is more for pollution control of some sort but no one really knows.

All I can tell you is they do nothing positive and I have never seen removal of one harm a Ski.

Kawasakis have a similar filter on the exhaust outlet. This may be where you've picked up the idea their for water vapour control as they stop it coming back onto the plugs. Kwakas need this as they sit so low in the water compared to all other modern Skis.
Having said that theres ways around that too and I never use them.

So definately the "ribbon" out :)

Even the spark has a ribbon
Now removed. I was told its is a flame arrester in case of a backfire like in the 2stroke days and cause a Big Bang but not needed in a four stroke no back fire

Dan I don't know if your ski has one but I bet it will as its a USA requirement to have one check your parts listing.

Yes any ski will go better with out it (4 stroke ) as no back fire it will let more air in giving better bottom end.

I looked on worx.com.au don't list a ribbon delete kit so you should be able to just take it out.
On the spark everything is plastic so you have to fit a blank to give it something to clamp on to
