Surf champ in death-defying near-miss
« on: July 01, 2011, 07:03:06 AM »
From BRIDGET LACY, The West AustralianJune 30, 2011, 1:12 pm

Amazing pictures have emerged of two-time world surfing champion Tom Carroll narrowly escaping serious injury on a huge wave near Gracetown last week.
Local photographer Jamie Scott was there as the drama unfolded last Monday during filming for Carroll’s upcoming movie Storm Surfers 3D.
Mr Scott, who was hired for the day to take photos, said he was close by in an inflatable speedboat, photographing the scene as Carroll, who was riding a jetski, towed surfing partner Ross Clarke-Jones on to a wave.
When Carroll tried to ski back over the wave, he was bounced back into the face of it.
The 49-year-old surfing champion battled to get the jetski off the wave and then to ride it behind Clarke-Jones, but was eventually engulfed by the wave. The jetski was destroyed, as well as an attached 3D camera worth $15,000.
Mr Scott said the choppy water meant he lost sight of the pair for a while and was amazed when they reappeared on the wave, with Clarke-Jones unaware that Carroll and the jetski were bearing down on him.
“It was only when we got back to shore and I had a look at my photos that I realised how serious it was,” Mr Scott said.
“We had a laugh about it afterwards but they were really lucky they didn’t get hurt.
“I have seen a lot of crazy things (during my time doing surf photography) but that was up there for sure.”
Mr Scott said both Carroll and famous big wave surfer Clarke-Jones were towed back to shore with only Carroll nursing a bruised shin.
The lucky escape was not only captured by Scott, but also by 3D video cameras. The footage is set to be shown in the upcoming movie.
