Yes I could meet you there. It is only a couple of minutes ride from home. I have thought about just following the tangalooma flyer over. As I thought I would be able to buddy up coming home.

Hi Geoff,

I would love to go however would prefer to commit closer to Sunday as i would like a  more updated weather forecast. Maybe Friday morning would be ideal to look at the weather again.

I've been across the bay to Tangalooma from the Port plenty of times. I don't think you will keep up with the Flyer its pretty quick in rough weather. Maybe you have already.
I use my compass its only one bearing point the whole trip easy!

What do you think?

Hi guys, the trip does not have to be this weekend! I am keen for whenever the weather is good enough. It has been very windy today! I have tomorrow off and am going to put in at Jacobs well in the morning for a run this week!

G'day all,

Picked up a new SeaDoo few months ago, and kicked off the shenanigans - my first ever ride on a ski - with a trip from TCB across to Inskip and then on to the Double Island Point light via the breaker line at Rainbow. Fantastic!!

Next trip I put two kiddies on the back and went from Nudgee to Tangalooma and had a great day around the wrecks, then got knocked about when Moreton did her usual trick of defying the weather bureau and roughing up for the return!! Since then have been to Mogerah, Somerset, a nice jaunt from Jindalee to the river mouth and return, and across from Colmslie to St Helena for brekkie.

With that under my belt, I'm thinking that I'm familiar enough with my ski to have a crack at some really interesting stuff .... I've always wanted to have a close look at the remains of the Rufus King in the South Passage. Probably more from a nostalgic perspective .... I used to see it's superstructure from Flinders Beach as a kiddy and swore one day I'd check it out!! Now's my time!!

Has anybody had any experience with this trip and can offer any advice??? I'm really mad about safety stuff ... and realise that some wrecks, by definition, are in dangerous waters ... would it be better to try this in company with another ski rather than my customary solo adventures??? I'd only ever do it on an ultra flat forecast using GPS guidance ... and likely on an incoming tide. Would it be best to leave from Manly... or Fishermans Island for this trip would you say??

Look forward to your insights ...

Hey Meawls...i dunno if theres any of the rufus left, ive been over the bar dozens of times and never seen her. I read on another forum years ago some guy stumbled across a wreck in there in big seas when she popped out in a trough. Definately a way better ride to South passage from Manly or even raby bay. Opens up your ride to all the great spots like horseshoe, rainbow, little ship club, and make sure you stop in at the gutter bar. As with all bar crossings exercise caution, buddy up, and make sure someone knows where you are.
See ya at the Gutter Bar

G'Day Johno,

Thanks ... see this link ...   http://www.satellite-sightseer.com/id/8221/Australia/Queensland/Brisbane/Wreck_of_the_Rufus_King   ...  I was aware that the superstructure had long ago ceased to be visible, but there sure as hell seems to be a bit of the back end remaining. The front part was refloated and re-used soon after it was sunk, so it was only ever the back end left behind.

Just looking at what the google earth shot shows, it's a fair bet that what's left may well be visible in a big trough, as you mentioned. I have the GPS coordinates, so getting close to it shouldn't be a problem.

You are based at Flinders Beach?? My parents bought one of the first blocks released there in 1966 (I think the street is named "Providence St") ... and it was during visits there and camping trips that we'd see the wreck. Unfortunately they sold the block in 1996 or so.

Are there any pitfalls to be aware of when making the approach from Manly to the passage???

Many thanks for the input mate, and look forward to more of your local knowledge!
