Jet Ski Freeride Event Mornington jetski rider Mitch Young has sights set on world title
« on: July 28, 2014, 05:56:43 AM »
MITCH Young is known on the international jetski circuit for his signature move, the Superman Tray Grab.

The death-defying move involves pulling a backflip while on the jetski, throwing his legs in the air and holding on to a small tray near his feet as the other hand holds on tight to the handle.

It’s these high-risk moves that have rewarded the Mornington man with the Australian title in freeriding for the past two years.

He just returned from Europe after competing in two rounds of the world title of the International Freeride Watercraft Association.

Young is sitting pretty in second place on the world competition ladder, just three points behind Cranbourne rider Mick Anthony.

The 28-year-old has only been riding for the past five years, but has taken a leadership role in the sport, sitting on the Victorian Free-ride Association committee.

The concreter, who gets in most of his training over weekends at Inverloch, said the sport had grown quickly in popularity.

“You used to get about 30 riders, now it’s sold out in under seven minutes to 120 riders,” he said.

He said there was still confusion about the sport, judged on aerial tricks and waveriding.

There are two more rounds in the US and Brazil, giving Young a chance to clinch the world title.
