Title: Social Ride to the Gutter Bar - Sunday 24th June '18
Post by: Mandy on June 22, 2018, 10:08:21 AM
Hi everyone,

We're heading out on Sunday morning from Paradise Point Boat Ramp on Paradise Parade for a lovely social ride.

Its looking like a bright sunny day but we're still watching the wind to decide on our path.

If the wind stays down we'll head to Jumpinpin and then cross over and head around North Straddie.

If the wind speed is up we'll go up there and back on inland waterways.

As always everyone is wc to join us  chr

You'll probably need some extra fuel. As a guide we'll carry an extra 20 litres on our supercharged Skis.
Make sure you have a jacket as even in the bright sunshine it will be a bit chilly when underway remember it's a 60-80 kph wind then! You may even get windburn so bring the 50+ too.

We are also taking a coffee thermos  cf  If we see Whales on the outside on North Straddie we'll quietly sit and enjoy a coffee while they do their thing  cmra  Remember 300m distance off laws apply and we will be observing them.

We will stay well within the 2nm off shore zone so you won't need a PLB (although we do encourage them) and please make sure you carry your flares and V sheet.

If anyone has any questions please post below. We will post up any changes so check back before the ride and if you reply you'll get notifications of them.

We hope to see you on Sunday for heaps of FUN!!! :)

Something I think is worth mentioning about the gutter bar from yesterday is how much it has deteriorated as a venue unfortunately.
I'm certainly not referring to the magnificent part of the island and waterway, they remain pristine, however the service and a few other things about the venue has changed for the worse

Firstly there is no longer a cash machine and they only accept cash so you have no chance of buying anything with a card.

Secondly they have done a deal with the Tangalooma resort to take their visitors there for lunch as a part of the Island tour.
If you’ve ever had anything to do with the Tangalooma resort you know what that means!

As with Tangalooma they have limited access to anybody except paying tourist. So now you need to be booked in to be guaranteed of service. That also means you need to turn up at exactly the time you're booked which is very difficult to do when riding jet skis.

We arrived and sat down just prior to the Tangalooma guests arriving. After a couple of our group were served the rest of our group were told they could not be served until the tourist group had been served their meals, which would be at least 30 minutes, so those people were unable to order.
Here is a picture of a bowl of chips that one of us got. As they had limited cash this bowl of chips is all they could afford and it was $20!!!

I guess this is another case of Queensland locals loosing out to tourism and whilst tourism is very good for jobs I believe the locals ought to be entitled to enjoy the same facilities. Under the ACCC these businesses are bound to serve us if we book so I guess we need to think that through and play their game a little in future. But with those prices I think I'll be grabbing a packed lunch at the servo on the way to the ramp and enjoying it on the beach in future.

This ride was sooooooo good.  Thank you Mandy and Nigel for being so welcoming to newbies.  I would have never done this without you guys putting out the invite.  Also, thanks to everyone else on the ride for putting up with my newbie antics.  I have a lot to learn.

Navigating the southern bay waterway is quite daunting for beginners, so it was great to have the opportunity to be part of a larger group and have someone with experience take the lead.  Particularly when it came to going out over the Jumpinpin bar.  Thanks.

I lost count of how many whales we saw.  They were everywhere, I was genuinely concerned about hitting one. My only regret is that I could not get down deep enough to get that gold watch!

I ended up with 141km on the clock and went thru 68.5lt of fuel!

The water down the southern end of the bay is a lot smoother than up near Bribie, think I'm only going to ski down there now.   ml1

When are we doing this again?

Hi Mandy, are you talking Gutter Bar or Tangas? Johno and I went to the Gutter Bar week ago and everything was as always. Only new was the German barmaid instead of the Scottish ones  rotflmao Few fishos bitching about Jetskiers coming there now too. They must have lived in a cave for the last 6 years  ml1
