Jet Ski Social Ride How to fix the GCCC created problem at Jipplers - Its TIME!
« on: May 11, 2018, 07:50:42 PM »

As everyone knows, we all love going to Tipplers to hang out and jibber jabber together   clp chr wv

But, there is a huge down side to this. We have to be prepared to accept shocking service, food we wouldn't eat if there was a choice, filthy 3rd world bathrooms that many most men won't even use, waiting 2 hours for coffee if your lucky etc.

Over the last couple of years I've had to walk away from at least 15 coffees (paid for) that haven't turned up by the time the group is ready to leave.
I've lost count of how many people complain about the terrible service and I've lost count of how many people complained of being unwell after going there.

Last weekend someone had a frozen hash brown on their plate as part of the big breakky. We all had a "taste" and a laugh only to be bailed up by the gistappo and told we need to pay for a big breakky if we're going to eat someone elses food. Frozen or not. When we asked for a refund it was denied.

This has been going on forever so yes nothing new here.

The problem is that South Straddie is a magnificent sand Island with stunning native flora and fauna. But its all protected. This means that there is no chance of building on it with new permanent structures.

As have most of you, we have tried reasoning with the management there. I think it's fair to say they don't really care what we think - they have a monopoly.

When asked about how long a coffee will take the management say there is no room for more coffee machines - but why take the orders? Perhaps ripping us off is part of the business plan?

There is a Kiosk next door. We've tried that a few times over summer too. Its been closed every time with a sign saying go next door for service. When we do they say they are too busy to open it so we have to get something there. And wait for hours for it.

They also claim they are understaffed and cant get anyone to work there. People aparently find it too hard to get to work. Of course their Boat is always moored in prime position on the 20 minute max public pontoon. They can get to work OK. But there is a South Straddie Ferry coming and going if you need it.

Last wekeend we observed a boat with old people in it waiting to get pontoon access while the managers Boat just sat there. I have never seen any business owner take the prime parking spot in their business. But if you have a monopoly,  who cares right!

There are other options. Couran Cove will "allow" you to enter with a $35 up front payment. You can get this back at the bar but we're riding so it's no good to us.

There is McLarens landing which is awesome but they dont do breakfast as they only do lunch and events at night.

Horizons is brilliant but a bit small for 300 Jet Skiers to gather. Paradise Point is fantastic with all the restaurants. The Ramada welcomes us and when the 40 knots opens up on the Coomera south arm it will be easy to get to. (only a few weeks away) and theres heaps of places in Southport.

BUT, we love the tranquility of South Straddie! Why should a couple of money hungry bad business owners ruin it for all of us?

So we have come up with a plan and have taken the idea to the council!

After a few Friday night sessions at Night Quarter (Helensvale) we noticed that the containers and shelter shade are all temporary.

What if the lawned area adjacent the playground had maybe 6 of these stalls with heaps of tables and chairs just like Night Quarter?

The vendors could open for breakky/lunch and reduce the "burden" on the existing filthy business.

Then we would have a choice for coffee, pancakes perhaps, and all the nice things that we expect in the real world (like smashed Avo haha).

Well the council is going to look into it so we'll keep you all informed of what is being discussed.

Wait until the monopoly enjoying Jipplers owners find out! There will be a mushroom cloud of coffee beans flowing at full throttle as they try to win us all back haha!

So how about we come up with a name lovf

Boaties Quarter doesn't fit properly, Jet Ski Quarter sounds awesome but we have to share of course :) ,

so how about the Water Quarter!

See you there wh

Please find following a copy of the correspondence we have sent.

Attention Rob Whale, Mayor Tom Tate, Cr Cameron Caldwell, Hon Stuart Robert MP

Good afternoon,

We are finding the current public facilities available for Jet Skiers and for Boaties on South Stradbroke Island unacceptable.

As everyone knows, after a tough week at work many of the Boating public of the Gold Coast, Brisbane and other areas within proximity love going to Tipplers to hang out in a beautiful setting with our friends.

But, there is a huge down side to this. We have to be prepared to accept shocking service, food we wouldn't eat if there was a choice, filthy 3rd world bathrooms that many most people can't even use, waiting 2 hours for coffee if you’re lucky - from the current vendors at the Tipplers Café.

Over the last couple of years I've personally had to walk away from at least 15 coffees (paid for) that haven't turned up by the time the group is ready to leave. The operators claim there is not enough room in their facility to have a bigger coffee machine and yet they continue to take orders. Perhaps ripping us off is part of the business plan?  I've lost count of how many people complain about the terrible service and I've lost count of how many people complained of being unwell after going there.

As an example, a few weeks ago someone had a frozen hash brown on their plate as part of the “big breakky”. We all had a "taste" and a disbelieving laugh only to be bailed up by the Gestapo manager and told we need to pay for a big breakky if we're going to eat someone else’s food. Frozen or not. When we asked for a refund it was denied.

This has been going on forever since the council led closure of the previous Tipplers. So nothing new here.

We’re told by the existing management that their problem is the place is too small to operate and that whilst South Straddie is a magnificent sand Island with stunning native flora and fauna, it’s all protected. This means that there is no chance of building onto the existing structure with new permanent structures. Could you confirm this please?

We have tried reasoning with the management there. I think it's fair to say they don't really care what we think - they have a certain monopoly.

For example there is a Kiosk next door that they also run. We've tried that a few times over summer. It’s been closed every time with a sign saying go next door for service. When we do they say they are too busy to open it so we have to get something there - and consequently wait for hours for it. They also claim they are understaffed and can’t get anyone to work there. People apparently find it too hard to get to work.

Of course their Boat is always moored in prime position on the 20 minute max public pontoon. They state they hold a permit to do this. Surely they ought to be redirected to an unused adjacent public pontoon or to use a tender.

A couple of weeks ago we observed a boat with elderly people in it, waiting to get pontoon access while the managers Boat just sat there. I have never seen any business owner take the prime parking spot in their business. But if you have a monopoly….  who cares right!

So they can get to work OK. But there is a Ferry coming and going if they need it.

There are other options for us ratepayers:. Couran Cove will "allow" you to enter with an up front payment. You can get this back at the bar but we're not able to make use of that so it's no good to us. There is McLarens landing which is awesome but they don’t do breakfast as they only do lunch and big events at night. Most of us are due back at work by then.
Horizons are brilliant but a bit small for 300 Jet Skiers and Boaties to gather together all day, and not where we want to be. Paradise Point is fantastic with all the restaurants. The Ramada welcomes us and when the 40 knots opens up on the Coomera south arm it will be easy to get to. (only a few weeks away) and there’s heaps of places in Southport.

BUT, we love the tranquillity of South Straddie! And many public dollars have been invested into making it a public place to enjoy. Why should a couple of money hungry bad business owners be allowed ruin it for all of us?

We have tried taking a packed lunch and coffee but all of the tables and chairs outside of the licensed area are taken with their customers.

So we have come up with a plan and ask the council and State Government to implement it asap please.

After a few sessions at the highly successful Night Quarter (Helensvale) we noticed that the containers and shelter shade are all temporary and self contained.

What if the lawned area adjacent the playground had maybe 6 of these container stalls with heaps of public tables and chairs - just like Night Quarter? Perhaps even the white shade sails used at Helensvale Night Quarter could cover the area.

The vendors could open for breakky/lunch at peak periods such as the weekends only, and reduce the "burden" on the existing monopoly holding business.

Then we would have a choice for coffee, pancakes perhaps, and all the nice things that we expect in the real world with genuine competition.

In addition to this plan we would also like make a formal request to have an area set aside for Boat and Jet Ski Clubs to share each weekend, on a roster basis,  to hold a fundraising sausage sizzle and to raise awareness for their respective Clubs.
As is done at Bunning’s. We would only need a place to store a quick shade and a BBQ and 2 eskies. We could manage the rosters, PLI & CoC’s.

We have even come up with an exciting  name for this exciting destination.

With the success of the Night Quarter - Boaties Quarter or Jet Skis Quarter sounds good but doesn't fit everyone fairly,

So how about the”Water Quarter”!

I look forward to a positive response on this project.

Kind Regards,

Mandy Brown.  m.0449 077 747.

Latest Update:

Cameron Caldwell has requested the GCCC investigate.

We will keep you all posted and will probably launch a petition in the near future to support the proposal for a Water Quarter.

In the meantime if anyone has anything to add to the issue please post it below or send it through to us by msg.
