Jet Ski Social Ride QRBC March meeting
« on: March 14, 2019, 10:59:01 AM »
Last night the QRBC had it's March meeting which was held at the Gold Coast for the first time since 2014!

Thank you to Hal, John, Peter and the very talented team at Gold Coast Waterways Authority for hosting us all.

It was a very full agenda and we welcomed many interesting visitors including agency representatives from Victoria.

We discussed  issues regarding safety, legislation, the environment and infrastructure. The War on wrecks is progressing well as reported on by Kim Richards MP (Chair of War on wrecks and the member for Redlands).

Navigation lights were highlighted as an intrinsic safety requirement.

Details of requirements can be found here: http://qrbc.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Navi-require.pdf
and an installation guide is here: http://qrbc.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Navi-Install.pdf

Our 50th year is proving to be as busy as all others as we work to maintain and improve the industry for all recreational water users alike. Your club/association delegates will provide detailed updates through your usual communication/s.

For more information please contact the QRBC http://qrbc.org.au/contact-us/

Of significant importance to report this month is the AJSA discussions taking place with Marine safety Victoria.

There has been an escalation of problems in Victoria over the past few years.

Various social riding groups have tried to make their voices heard but whilst their intentions are great, unfortunately some of the strategies deployed, haven't been received well by the non Jet Skiing community and have in some instances inflamed the situation.

Whilst Facebook provides an excellent platform (when its working) to communicate social rides, the presence of content is unfortunately not always the presence of competence.

Through qualified two way mutual discussion a strategy will be deployed for trial in Victoria that the AJSA believes will give both the Jet Skiing community and all of the other water users their right to enjoy the water safely together.

More details will be published in the near future.

The Australian Jet Ski Association exists to protect the rights or recreational Jet Skiers around Australia.
We rely on funding from membership fees, running social and training events and the Australian Sports Foundation initiatives.

If you would like to become involved and support our cause please become a member of your Association! http://ajsa.org.au/product-category/memberships/

Special Announcement - SE Qld

On behalf of the Coast Guard and Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) please be advised of the following.

* A commercial member/s of the Jet Ski industry have been incorrectly advising riders that the emeregency services will not tow a Jet Ski when it has broken down.

This is completely FALSE information.

Both VMR and Coast Guard DO TOW broken down Jet Skis and they welcome your request for assistance at ANY TIME you may need it.

VIP

Some of you may be aware that Jet Skis need the engine and/or exhaust and/or intercooler water flows blocked off while towing.

This is because the cooling water is delivered from the Jet Pump whilst underway, even when the motor is not running.

Unfortunately, when the motor is not running, the exhaust gasses aren't forcing the cooling water out of the exhaust and it may back up against your open exhaust valves, into the cylinder bore, out the intake valves, flooding your motor and potentially sinking your Jet Ski.

If this occurs you must NOT try to start your Jet Ski as it will be hydrolocked and severe damage will occur.

Therefore

When VMR or Coast Guard tow your Jet Ski they will either take precautions by closing your tow tap or clamping your water lines or placing your Jet Ski onto the back of their Boat on a platform.

Occasionally the correct lines are unknown. To rectify this we always place electrical tape on the right lines so that they can be identified if required. Have your service agent do the same if they havent already.

If all else fails be advised that VMR and Coast Guard will simply tow your Ski at a safe speed to ensure this doesn't happen.

Please share this information around Queensland to correct the misinformation that has been circulated.

Another special announcement SE Queensland

The 6 knot zone trial on the Gold Coast (South arm of the Coomera River) has almost come to an end.

Please have your say and share your opinion of the trial.

Any comments or feedback can be sent via email to mail@gcwa.qld.gov.au

Please copy admin@ajsa.org.au so that we can leverage the numbers of respondents in the affirmative. You can also respond here as a reply and we will pass it on for you.

The map for the trial area can be found here:

https://gcwa.qld.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/S8sp-63-3-Broadwater-near-Coomera-Island-and-Coomera-River-South-Branch.pdf

Why is this important?

If you enjoy using this area at 40 knots it is imperative to respond.

There have been a few residents that have been upset at the larger Boats breaking the law and speeding past their pontoons causing them problems. There have also been a few Jet Skis go too close to them. Remember 60m off at all times.

These residents have Cameron Caldwell and Tom Tate wrapped around their fingers as they are hard right supporters financially. They may only have one vote but they pay for the campaigning that swings others in their favor. In order to raise funds and gather populist votes Tate and Caldwell will agree to anything. Be assured what they want they will get unless we can show the numbers.

A tremendous amount of time and effort went into getting this for you - respond now and make sure we don't loose the 40 knots. Otherwise we will be back to 6 knots with the bigger Boats in the very near future.

It's up to you!
